Press Release: Quarter 1 2024
Circulation Update
In the first quarter of 2024, the latest circulation figures have indicated a 7.5% year-on-year decline, underscoring the ongoing economic challenges and shifts in consumer behaviors impacting the media industry. The newspaper sector has demonstrated relative stability, with a modest 1.6% decrease in circulation from the previous quarter. Conversely, magazines have experienced a notable 7.6% growth in the same period.
It’s important to highlight that the inclusion of digital-only publications in these figures is a significant factor contributing to the observed trends in overall circulation.
The current economic climate, coupled with the evolving preferences of consumers, has led to reduced discretionary spending on media. This, along with the growing prominence of digital platforms and alternative information sources, continues to reshape how audiences engage with media, posing particular hurdles for traditional print media outlets.
On a positive note, the ABC has welcomed an additional title to its membership, marking the first instance of membership growth since the second quarter of 2021.
This development is a testament to the enduring value of ABC certification in fostering transparency, comparability, and credibility within the industry. It’s crucial to acknowledge that the circulation data does not encompass all publications, as numerous titles remain unregistered with the ABC.
This underscores the importance of ABC membership in ensuring accurate and reliable circulation figures. The ABC remains committed to its role as a voluntary organization, offering its members the benefits of validated distribution numbers that uphold the principles of transparency, consistency, and credibility.
Advertisers and brand managers are encouraged to engage with their print, digital, and email publication partners to discuss the significance of ABC membership certificates. Insisting on the latest ABC certification is a prudent practice for ensuring informed advertising decisions and always request the latest ABC certificate.
