Overview


Any person (natural or juristic) may apply for membership by signing and submitting the prescribed application form. There are two classes of membership, namely Proprietor membership and Associate Membership. Proprietor Membership is granted to owners of an advertising medium, such as a magazine or newspaper. Associate Membership is granted to all other applicants, such as advertisers, advertising agencies, and other interested parties.

Guide to Becoming a Member


This is a guide to help new and prospective members understand what is required to obtain full membership to the ABC. You may only apply for membership once you have published at least 1 issue.

  1. Membership Application
  • Complete the application for membership online (abc.org.za),
  • Send 2 copies of the publication or Grant the ABC access (if product is a Digital Publication).
  • Pay the non-refundable administration fee and send proof of payment.
  • New members must select a suitable Sector and Category for their circulation. (refer to page 6 of the current reporting standards, for a description of the various categories)

 

  1. Auditability Assessment questionnaire:
  • All members are required to have their data audited. Members may opt to have the ABC audit the data or an auditor registered with IRBA (Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors)
  • Should members opt for the ABC to perform the audit, please contact the ABC for a quote.
  • Should members opt for an external auditor to perform the audit, an auditor’s appointment letter is required.
  • The following information must be provided: – A brief description of your target market, How is the publication distributed, Copies printed per issue and Distribution breakdown.
  • Please upload the following documents to your application: – Proof of company registration, Audit Appointment letter and Latest Rate Card.
  • Once the auditability assessment is completed and the ABC auditor is satisfied with all the information, The ABC will send you a letter granting you provisional membership and when your initial certificate is required to be submitted to the ABC.

 

  1. Submission Cycle
  • All new members report according to the following cycles: a) Quarterly – titles printing 11 or more issues per annum b) Six Monthly – titles printing between 6 and 10 issues per annum c) Annual – titles printing 5 or less issues per annum.

 

  • Your initial certificate will depend on your cycle from above: a) Quarterly – Jan-Mar, April-June, July-September or October-December b) Six Monthly – January to June or July to December c) Annual – January to December or July to June – You may apply for a certificate covering a shorter period under certain circumstances.
  1. Data Submission
  • When your initial certificate is due (refer to Deadline dates Schedule (please insert link to Deadline dates):
  • log onto the website (www.abc.org.za)
  • click on Login (on your top right hand side)
  • enter your User name and password
  • click Submission – select either Printed, Digital or Events (depending on the registered product type)
    • your publication/s and or product will then be listed (click on Awaiting Submission)
    • complete the input form with your circulation figures and click save

(There should be no balancing difference in the last section of the input form)

  • If there are no differences and you are happy with the figures, click Submit, at the bottom of the Input form.
  • The ABC will verify the input form to ensure that all the information is complete. An e-mail will be sent to you once the input form has been processed or a revision has been requested.
  • You will then be able to download and print the circulation certificate. The certificate needs to be signed by you and stamped by the auditor completing the audit or by the ABC where applicable.
  • The auditor needs to audit the input form and submit his/her original audit report which together with the signed circulation certificate must be uploaded on the ABC website.
  • Where the ABC audits the input form, a signed certificate must be uploaded on the website on or before the deadline date, as the audit may be conducted out of the submission period.
  • It is advised that all deadline dates are clearly understood.
  • After your initial audit certificate AND audit report is submitted to the ABC: – You will receive a letter from the ABC granting you full membership. – You may only use the ABC logo in your marketing material after full membership is granted.

Registration Instructions


To Register for ABC click on (Register).

  1. Create Username and Password”.
    After this stage, an email will be received requesting email confirmation. Confirm your email using a link provided and proceed to the next step.
  2. Once you have created your Login credentials, you will be directed to the ABC user application form.
  3. Select the appropriate application type and follow the instructions.

a. New User New User for an existing Publisher / Associate Member / Member

b. New Publisher Application Publisher Membership is granted to owners of an advertising medium, such as a magazine or newspaper. Your user and the new Publisher will be registered at the same time. Fees are applicable. See Schedule Membership – Fees.

c. New Associate Member Application Associate Membership is granted to applicants, such as advertisers, advertising agencies , and other interested parties. Your user and the new Associate Member will be registered at the same time. Fees are applicable. See Schedule Membership – Fees.

d. New Member Application Membership of other interested parties with more than 1 staff member requiring access. Your User and the new Member will be registered at the same time.

All new registrations are subject to approval by the ABC. On application the ABC will contact you as soon as your application has been approved. A User manual will be sent to you to assist you in the most effect use of ABC online site.

New Publication are registered after the approval stage of new publishers. The user manual will guide you through the process.

For existing publishers refer to your user manual to register new publications.
